MacConkey Agar (MAC) is a selective and differential culture media commonly used for the isolation of Gram-negative bacteria. It contains salt which inhibits the growth of Gram positive bacteria and Crystal Violet (CV) dye which turns red if lactose fermenting bacteria are present.

Simply add 52g to 1L distilled water, stir whilst heating to dissolve, then sterilise in an autoclave before using.
