Darwin Biological has science in its roots, quite literally. Meg, our founder, grew up immersed in the world of biological and science supplies, developing an understanding of the sector from the inside that very few people can claim. Deeper still, she can claim connection to some of the biggest names in 20th century biology and beyond, counting E. B. Ford FRS FRCP, the British ecological geneticist and Darwin Medal recipient amongst her cousins. Ford’s pioneering work on genetic polymorphism, via the likes of the Peppered Moth that forms our logo, helped establish evolutionary biology as the field it is today.
For Darwin Biological that closeness has meant we could see clearly what wasn't working in the sector. For all the richness of the subject, the market for school science supplies had grown stagnant and disconnected from contemporary scientific thinking and practice. Specimens were inconsistent, quality was unpredictable, approaches were stuck in the past, and the experiments that should have been sparking curiosity in students were too often letting teachers and technicians down. When an experiment fails, it doesn't just waste a lesson, it can put a young person off a subject entirely. That felt unacceptable, and it was that frustration that drove Darwin Biological to be founded.
So in 2019, Meg founded Darwin Biological along with her husband Bil, with a clear purpose: to give educators, technicians, and biology enthusiasts access to reliable, ethically sourced biological supplies that actually work and are from the best possible source. Practical science, we believe, is where the subject comes alive, it is where a student stops reading about the subject and starts experiencing it. Getting that right matters, and so we built our approach around the principle of making it possible.
Family is at the core of what Darwin Biological is and how it operates. It shapes the way the team works, the flexibility built into the business, the genuine care taken over every order, and the instinct to do right by the people and institutions we serve and that share a commitment to science and learning. As a family business we take this seriously, not as a line on a page or marketing notion, but as something that drives how we make decisions.
That same instinct extends to the partnerships we have built at the heart of what we do. Bil brought a particular passion for learned societies and scientific collections, the organisations that quietly sustain the infrastructure of biological knowledge and from this we built a range of partnerships that supported our vision. Our relationships with the CCAP, NCTC, The Linnean Society, the Royal Entomological Society, and the Bloomington Drosophila Stock Center, are not simply supply arrangements, they reflect a belief that connecting schools to these institutions is itself part of the mission of fostering knowledge and passion for biological education.
Darwin Biological has grown steadily from those foundations. Each year our team has grown along with our loyal customer base across secondary schools, colleges, and universities, and our product range continues to develop in response to what science education communities actually need. Meg and the team keep looking ahead, finding new ways to make science education more engaging, more sustainable, and more accessible to everyone.
