Where do our supplies come from and why does it matter?
Here at Darwin Biological we believe ethics and the environment should come into everything: every decision, every product, every transaction.
We believe where products come from matters just as much as what arrives in the classroom. From animal welfare and sustainability to traceability and scientific quality, ethical sourcing plays an important role in every decision we make.
We know these issues are not always obvious at first glance. Often, it’s only when someone explains the sourcing process that people begin to realise why it matters.
For us, ethical sourcing is not a trend or marketing phrase, it is part of our everyday decision-making.
So, here’s why it matters to us…
We want to be more in control of the supply chain and understand the supply process for three main reasons: sustainability, the environment and animal welfare.
Wherever possible, we prioritise UK sourcing instead of importing from overseas to reduce transportation impact, improve traceability and maintain closer oversight of the supply chain.
Our products do not come from Halal killed animals and in fact many are natural by-products of existing industries - but even then, we research the company they come from because we believe the animals should still have had a humane life, as animal welfare should always remain a priority.
Teachers today are increasingly looking for science resources that are not only effective in the classroom, but also responsibly sourced and aligned with wider school values around sustainability and ethics.

How we do it…
Quality and educational value are equally important when sourcing microbiology and live culture materials - so working closely with trusted suppliers and specialists, we are able to better understand exactly where materials come from and how they are produced.
We source:
- Dissection Specimens from British abattoirs as natural waste products from the food industry, helping ensure materials are responsibly obtained while reducing unnecessary waste.
- Bacteria Cultures from the UK Health Security Agency (previously Public Health England) before subculturing them in-house to create affordable microbiology resources for schools and colleges.
- Algae and Protozoa from world-renowned Culture Collection in Scotland, supporting both quality assurance and UK scientific expertise.
- Fruit Flies for genetics and life cycle studies from the world-leading Bloomington Drosophila Stock Centre in America before being bred and segregated in-house by our team. Managing cultures internally allows us to maintain quality control and fulfil large or bespoke orders.
