Kalanchoe daigremontiana. Mexican hat plants (also known as 'Devil's Backbone' or 'Mother of Thousands') are a great example of asexual reproduction. Each 'parent' plant produces numerous 'baby' plants along the edge of the leaves. Each 'baby' is formed with leaves and roots, eventually falling off and rooting easily in the soil below.

Grow at room temperature in bright but not direct light. Water around once a week, once soil is dry, do not over-water.

As the plantlets easily fall off the parent plant it is likely they will separate during transit, however within a few weeks more plantlets will have been produced. As a result please ensure you order with plenty of time if you wish to show the plantlets on the plant to a class.

Available as a pack of 20 plantlets or a single 'mother' plant in 9cm pot. (All pots are re-used and re-usable)

Customers appreciated the healthy plants and generous quantities, with one noting they "got way more than ordered." However, packaging issues were common - soil spillage and dry compost affected several shipments. Most plants arrived alive and thrived after repotting. Delivery times were prompt, typically within a week.

The plant was alive but in a very small pot

The plant was alive but in a very small pot. Packed badly so most of the soil had fallen out leaving bare roots. I had to immediately re pot and buy suitable soil mix.

Hi, Thank you for your feedback and I apologise for the delay in responding. Following your comments we have now changed at how we package and send our Mexican Hat Plants. Fingers crossed this seems to have addressed the issue.
Kind regards,
Meg

Mexican hat plant.

Was disappointed with the plant on arrival the ‘compost’ was dry and no longer in the pot, thankfully the plant and pot were in a sealed bag. Two of the larger leaves were broken. I ordered 60 offspring, intending our Early Years children to plant, care for and take one home, unfortunately they aren’t all rooting so we may have to rethink our plans. The parcel did arrive quickly, within a week of ordering.

Unusual plant

Heard about these plants at work and was quite intrigued, upon searching for the plant, I found Darwin Biological. Plant arrived well packaged with only slight soil spillage. It arrived about a week after I ordered, blaming the post office for that, as they are a bit random regarding deliveries.

Tops the Lot

Thanks for the Mexican Hat plants received just over a week ago. I was really impressed with the recyclable jiffy bag and paper the receipt was printed on. All the little babies arrived in a small cardboard box; there was way more than 20. They appeared dehydrated and I was worried I'd lose quite a few but I soon had them potted, and now they are all thriving with many of them doubled in size already. Thank you Darwin for a great service.
