We’re delighted to announce that Darwin Biological is moving into the former Woods of Shawbury building on Church Street. The property has been empty since June 2025, and transforming it into our new home will allow us to grow and offer an even wider range of biological specimens and specialist supplies to schools across England, Wales and Scotland.
As a Shawbury resident, our Founder and Managing Director, Meg Bilson, is proud to keep the company rooted in the village. “I’m so pleased to bring life back to this vacant unit and ensure our business remains in a place our staff know and love,” she says. “This move allows us to expand our offering, respond to growing demand for frozen specimens, and deliver a wider range of ethically sourced products more quickly.”
The new premises will give us space to increase stock levels, streamline operations and support future job opportunities. All supplies will continue to be sourced ethically — for example, our cow hearts are natural by‑products from a local abattoir whose welfare standards align with our own.
As an online and mail‑order business, our move won’t increase traffic in the area, and deliveries can continue to use the nearby lay-by. Meg also plans to turn the garden yard into a small wildlife haven in collaboration with experts from the Royal Entomological Society - part of our commitment to sustainability and inspiring curiosity in children who walk past the site.
Since founding Darwin Biological in 2019 in a spare room, we’ve grown steadily. Moving into a single‑level building will make our work more efficient and support the expansion of our niche live biological supplies, including preserved specimens, bacteria, fruit flies and algae for schools, universities and labs.
We remain committed to supporting both education and our local community. Recently, we donated £1,000 to Shawbury Parish Council for tree planting, and in November we distributed an expert-led practical booklet to 4,500 schools - feedback has been hugely positive, with technicians telling us it has made lessons easier and more engaging.
